On May 8 we attended the Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility (VBSR) conference. The conference was primarily geared toward for-profit businesses but was useful to meet new people and explore possibilities together anyway.
Lisa’s favorite speaker was one of the keynote speakers, Tinotenda Charles Rutanhira from Vermont Professionals of Color. I did not know about him or this organization previously and how much they have to offer. Their goal is “to build a community and network that promotes, supports, and affirms People of Color in a way that helps them succeed personally and professionally.” They have support for all kinds of organizations to hire and retain professionals of color, including putting open positions on their website. In addition, Tinotenda is an inspiring and brilliant speaker and human being. If we are serious about diversifying the educators in our schools and for educators to share the identities of the students in our schools, there is help available. Please check them out.
Spending the day with like-minded people was nourishing and heartening. From the keynote that included Secretary of the Treasury Mike Pieciak and Mamava co-founder Sascha Mayer in addition to Tinotenda, to the breakout sessions and the tables, Jessica found inspiration and motivation. All of these were welcome after a particularly challenging year supporting schools and educators. The most meaningful experience of the day for her was in the breakout session on leadership. A diverse panel was skillfully facilitated to share experiences and tell stories. The session included audience participation, reflection, and a chance to connect. The panelists could have shared their wisdom with us and impressed us, but it was how the audience was brought into the conversation that made it so engaging. It was a welcome reminder of the power of connection and inclusion, which make any experience brighter and more meaningful.
