A friend of mine shared this on Facebook:
Can you relate?
I sure can.
This got me thinking about how much this matters to me. Workplace culture and the dynamics of meetings are two of the reasons that I do the work I do. It frustrates me that more people don’t know how to create the space for equal voice or the conditions for people to want to participate.
All kinds of things can impact the quality of meetings as well as teams and how well they function. In turn this impacts the quality of the work and decisions they create, the workplace culture, and people’s job satisfaction. All of these can be positively impacted by intentionally creating highly effective teams.
What I mean by "highly effective" is a team that gets a lot done and has fun doing it, where there is healthy disagreement and accomplishment of high quality work, where real relationships with each other develop over time, and where people can bring their whole selves to the room without leaving parts of themselves at home.
Does this sound like too much to ask for? Not in my experience. I have been part of teams like this over and over in schools and organizations and we have developed an intentional process to build these capacities and qualities with teams. Is this something you’d like at your workplace? If so, let’s talk. lisa@starlingcollaborative.org
